After the Storm Passes

On March 27, 2009, a low-end EF1 tornado with winds of about 85 to 90 mph touched down near Firetower Road south of Greenville, NC, leaving about 40 homes with minor damage, some with shingles torn off. A decade earlier, Hurricane Floyd pushed the Tar River at Greenville to 29.72 feet on September 21, 1999, far above the 18.08-foot peak in the USGS record; 11 of the 12 USGS gauges across the Tar-Pamlico basin set new marks.

In October 2016, Hurricane Matthew left 12 to 18 inches of rain in many places across the southern Coastal Plain. Hurricane Florence, in September 2018, became the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the Carolinas. On May 15, 2025, the Weather Service warned of a confirmed tornado near Pactolus, about 10 miles east of Greenville, NC, and of possible roof damage; it was a warning, not a damage survey. May is also the state's peak month for hail: the NC State Climate Office counts more than 2,500 confirmed May reports statewide since 1955.

When Homeowners Ask for Storm & Hail Damage Roofs

  • Lifted or missing shingles. A strong gust can bend a tab back or tear it loose, leaving nail heads open to the next shower.
  • Limb strikes. A falling pine or oak limb can crack shingles or punch into the decking.
  • Leaks after a long soaking. A day of tropical rain can find a weak seam in flashing or a valley.
  • Marks after a hailstorm. Bruised shingles and dented vents are hard to see from the ground.

The Usual Sequence

  1. Stay on the ground. Look from the yard, or the attic if safe, never from a wet roof.
  2. Take dated pictures of every slope, shingle pieces on the lawn, dented vents or gutters, and new ceiling stains.
  3. Keep water out with a tarp or temporary patch, and save the receipts.
  4. Tell your insurer if you plan to claim, and note the claim number.
  5. Have a roofer record the damage and write an estimate.

What You Can Expect

A request from this page reaches one independent roofer in Pitt County, who sets the visit, explains the findings and writes any estimate. This site does no roof work and quotes nothing; the roofing company that gets your request pays it, and you're never charged or given anything.

Before signing, look for a line-item scope and proof of insurance. There's no state roofing license, but a job of $40,000 or more needs a general contractor license, searchable on the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors site.

From Claim to Approved Scope

Your policy is an agreement between you and your insurer, and the claim stays with the two of you. A roofer can show you damage and price the work but may not negotiate the claim; for paid help, hire a public adjuster holding a state license, or an attorney.

The deductible is yours. An offer to cover, waive or hide it in the price is a red flag, and the state's law against unfair and deceptive trade practices covers the way roofers treat you. Never sign over your insurance payment to a contractor.

If you sign a roof contract and the insurer then denies the claim in writing, North Carolina lets you cancel within five business days of that denial. Until the window closes, no work or payment can be required of you, apart from emergency work to protect the house. See the North Carolina roofing rules.

Quick Answers

Should I file a claim after every storm?

Not always. Weigh the likely repair cost against your deductible, and remember that filing is your decision alone. A roofer's written estimate helps you compare the numbers, but the roofer has no say in whether you claim or what the insurer pays.

Does storm damage mean I need a whole new roof?

No. Many storm problems come down to a few shingles, a vent collar or a strip of flashing. A roofer can say whether a fix will hold or the roof is near its end anyway; see roof repair for smaller jobs.

How soon should someone look at the roof?

Soon enough to stop a leak from spreading, with no need to rush into a contract. Policies often set a deadline for reporting damage, so read yours or ask your agent. Take your photos first, then send a request when you're ready.

Can this site tell me whether hail hit my roof?

No. This site doesn't inspect roofs, and the May hail count above covers the whole state, not any one storm in Pitt County. Only a roofer up on your roof, or your insurer's adjuster, can say what a storm really did.
